5 Common Problems in Commercial Refrigerators

April 27, 2023

Commercial refrigerators come in all shapes and sizes, each one with its own unique set of problems. Any knowledge of such issues can help keep your refrigerator running smoothly and efficiently. Read on to discover five of the most common problems businesses experience with their commercial refrigerators.

1. Temperature Imbalance

Temperature fluctuations are one of the most common problems that a commercial refrigerator might develop. If the outside of your refrigerator door feels hot or if warm air comes from the inside, there is clearly something wrong. This problem can result from clogged vents, which hinder airflow and inhibit appropriate cooling.

Another possibility is a defective compressor. Compressors dispense refrigerant through the coils. Thus, any damage to your fridge's compressor will cause the refrigerator to chill inadequately.

Incorrect settings might also potentially cause temperature issues in a business refrigerator. If anyone adjusts the thermostat incorrectly, the food inside can get either too hot or too cold, which can result in spoiling and foodborne illness. Check the thermostat frequently to ensure it is set at the right temperature.

2. Door Issues

Door seals help maintain the fridge's temperature as they keep cold and warm air in. If the door seal becomes worn or damaged, it must be changed immediately since cold air will escape and increase energy usage and perhaps spoil food.

Aside from door seals, additional door issues to watch out for include old hinges, unclean seals, and a refrigerator that isn’t level. Worn-out hinges may make the door not close entirely, while unclean seals can make closing the door difficult. A refrigerator that isn’t level may cause difficulty in closing the door completely. If any of these problems exist, contact a repair service as soon as possible to minimize energy wastage and food deterioration risks.

3. Ice Build-up

A lack of appropriate air circulation can cause ice accumulation in a commercial refrigerator. If inadequate air circulates in the refrigerator, its internal temperatures may fall too low, which can cause ice to accumulate on the inner walls, evaporator coils, or door. Furthermore, if the refrigerator is full of food, this might obstruct airflow and lead to ice buildup.

A faulty evaporator fan is another possible source of ice buildup. If the fan works improperly, the inside temperature will drop, and ice will accumulate. Ice buildup can also result from a low charge on the refrigerator.

Finally, ice might form on the outside of the refrigerator. External ice accumulation indicates that the temperature inside the refrigerator is too low. In this instance, look for ice crystals that form on the doors, coils, or internal rear wall.

4. Strange Noises

Buzzing, clattering, leaking, rattling, squeaking, and humming are common strange noises. These sounds can result from an unclean condenser coil, a malfunctioning condenser fan, a faulty evaporator, or a circulation fan. A buzzing sound could indicate a defective fan motor, whereas a knocking sound could indicate a faulty compressor. In circumstances where the refrigerator is silent, the device has most likely been disconnected.

5. Water Leaks

A broken or misaligned drain pan is the most typical source of water leaks in a commercial refrigerator. This pan, situated beneath the refrigerator, catches any melted ice or frost that accumulates on the evaporator coils. Water can run over the borders of the pan if improperly positioned, which can cause a leak.

A clogged drain hose is another source of water leaks. This hose transports water from the drain pan to an exterior drain. The water will not drain properly if the drain hose becomes clogged with ice or food particles. When the ice melts, water may flow out of the refrigerator.

Finally, corroded or damaged parts, such as condensers and evaporator coils, might cause water leaks. Harsh chemicals and normal wear and tear on the appliance can cause these delicate elements to rust or shatter over time.
